BORDER WEAR THE GOLDEN SHOE FOR 2008
Eastern Province finished with six players in the top ten when the annual 36-hole Golden Shoe tournament for seniors was held at Royal Port Alfred Golf Club last weekend (March 8 and 9) but this was not sufficient to retain the trophy they had won the previous six years.
With the tournament being played on an aggregate stableford system, Border won the Golden Shoe by scoring 70.75 points to EP's 68.65.
A field of over 80 golfers participated for order of merit points counting towards interprovincial selection, and the players were out to impress the selectors. They revelled in perfect weather conditions the whole weekend and posted some impressive scores.
After the first round, four EP players were leading the pack: Nelius Potgieter on level par 72, Colin Mavuso on 73 and France Kana and Fraser Finlaison on 74.
On day two, Potgieter was once again the best with another round of 72 to be the clubhouse leader on 144. He was followed by Border's Brian Roberts and Kana in joint second place. Roberts scored 73 for a total of 149 and Kana posted a second-round score of 75.
The B/C division was won by Victor Ross from Border on 81 stableford points. Two EP players, Lungi Mahlati on 80 and Vic Adamini on 79, were second and third.
