Adelaide Seniors Win Interclub Golf

The Adelaide and Bedford golf clubs took the top places when they hosted the annual Nissan Interclub tournament for Senior Amateurs last weekend.

Nick Daniels of Fairview took the individual honours in the two-day event, held on November 15 and 16.

The tournament, held in the country areas every year to bring senior amateur golf to the "platteland," was an outstanding success again and the locals made good use of their home-ground advantage.

The Adelaide and Bedford golf clubs went out of their way to ensure a memorable weekend that included a fine Karoo dinner on the Saturday.  The Midlands area is having the worst drought in years but the clubs managed to provide the best possible tees and greens.

The format was teams of four players, playing 36 holes individual stableford, with the best three scores to count towards the trophy.

After round one, played at Adelaide, the locals were in the lead in 115 points, with Midlands second on 107 and Walmer Golf Club third on 106.

The second round was played at Bedford and the Adelaide players held on to their lead by posting a score of 110. Bedford was second on 109 and Fairview third on 107.

The Adelaide team of John Mathews, Bobby Brand, Ernest de Villiers and Allen Walker won the trophy for the second time in the seven-year history of the tournament. Their score of 225 points was good enough to beat neighbours Bedford (214) and Walmer Golf Club (by count-out from Motherwell on 210) into second and third places.

The individual 36-holes laurels went to Daniels on 75 (36,39), with Kobus Delport of Walmer Country Club second on 72 (32,40) points.

Hannes Bosch posted the best Saturday score from Adelaide on 39 points. Phillip Dixie from Bedford had the best Sunday score on 39.
