Eastern Province Ladies Mid-Am Team Crowned B-Division Champions, Securing Promotion to A-Division
NORTH WEST PROVINCE – The Eastern Province (EP) Ladies Mid-Am golf team has etched their name into the history books, delivering an outstanding performance at the South African Ladies Mid-Am Tournament held at Pecanwood Golf and Country Estate from August 11–14, 2026. In a triumphant display of grit, tenacity, and superb team spirit, the squad secured the B-Division title and earned a well-deserved promotion to the A-Division for the 2027 season.
Competing in unseasonably cold and wet conditions, our EP ladies proved their mettle on a challenging course. Pecanwood, renowned for its meandering fairways, fast greens, and a daunting array of over 170 bunkers and water hazards, tested the field throughout the tournament.
The tournament was not without obstacles. On the opening day, torrential rain forced GolfRSA, the organisers, to suspend play due to waterlogged greens. Despite some initial confusion regarding the suspension, it was ultimately ruled that all singles matches interrupted by the weather would be halved. The course, however, recovered quickly, allowing the players to return to full competition for the remainder of the week.
The EP team’s dominance was underscored by the individual consistency of its players. Every member of the four-woman squad finished in the tournament’s top ten Most Valued Player (MVP) standings—a testament to their collective strength.
Janine van der Merwe led the charge, finishing second overall with an impressive 9 points. She was closely followed by Shene du Toit and Sonja Sauerman, who tied for third with 8.5 points each, and Lynn Slogrove, who rounded out the team’s stellar effort with 7.5 points.
Over the course of six matches, our ladies remained unbeaten, securing four wins and two draws to finish with 10 points—effectively clinching the national B-Section championship.
Reflecting on the achievement, Chantré Viviers (Team Manager) praised the squad’s commitment and experience under pressure. “The win for team EP in this Mid-Amateur IPT is well deserved. The team performed outstandingly under conditions that were at times certainly not easy.”
Along with Captain Janine van der Merwe, the team was capably managed throughout the stay at the nearby Magaliespark Golf Club and Resort.
With the trophy secured and the promotion to the A-Division locked in, the focus for the Eastern Province Golf Union (EPGU) now shifts to the future. As the team looks toward the 2027 season, the organisation is already identifying the steps required to ensure the team competes at the highest level in the A-Division.
The Eastern Province Golf community has expressed immense pride in the team’s historic run. As the players return home, they do so not only as champions but as trailblazers who have set a new standard of excellence for women’s mid-amateur golf in the province.
